Barcelona has firmly rejected rumours from Spanish media that its sporting director, Deco, is considering stepping down after a challenging summer transfer window. Deco, a former Barcelona player from 2004 to 2008, became the club’s sporting director in 2023 after leaving his career as an agent. Reports surfaced suggesting that the former midfielder was rethinking his future at Camp Nou following a transfer window that didn’t go as smoothly as hoped. However, Barcelona quickly set the record straight.
“The club categorically denies the news that appeared on September 1 in *Diario Sport*, which cast doubt on Deco’s position,” the statement read. “We couldn’t be happier with the job Deco is doing and strongly refute this article.”
Barcelona’s transfer challenges this summer have been shaped by financial constraints, a problem that has persisted over the past few years. Despite ambitions to sign up to five players, including key targets like Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams, they managed only two signings: Dani Olmo from RB Leipzig and Pau Victor. This limited activity left gaps in the squad, as Barcelona had hoped to secure reinforcements by a left winger, holding midfielder, and a defender.
Federico Chiesa, Stefan Bajcetic, and Joao Cancelo were all linked with moves to Camp Nou, but these deals couldn’t materialize due to budget restrictions. The club could only register Dani Olmo after defender Andreas Christensen sustained a long-term injury, which freed up space in the squad.
Despite a delayed start due to injury, Olmo made his debut, scoring a dramatic late goal in Barcelona’s 2-1 victory over Rayo Vallecano, providing a glimpse of the talent Deco has been able to bring in under challenging circumstances.
