Kuti Criticizes Nigerian Government Over Mismanagement and Luxury Spending

The outraged singer took to Instagram Live to express his frustration with the Nigerian government, asserting that they do not require public funds to meet their obligations. He began by saying, “Don’t let anyone convince you that the Nigerian government cannot afford something or that they need private investment. If someone tells you that, tell them to shut up!”

Kuti criticized government officials for spending lavishly on themselves while neglecting education and infrastructure. He emphasized his point by referencing the $150 million spent on a private jet for the president, questioning the government’s priorities.

“Who donated to Tinubu’s $150 million jet? Who did they ask for donations?” he asked.

He further added, “Do you know how many schools $150 million could build? Or how long it could fund ten good primary schools? That money could sustain those schools for at least 20 years, educating ten generations of African children.”

Kuti went on to condemn the government’s reliance on public-private partnerships for essential services, noting that such measures only seem necessary when they involve benefiting the public. “When it’s about their enjoyment or building billion-naira houses, they don’t ask the public for donations. But when it’s time to build for the people, they suddenly need a public-private partnership. It’s nonsense!” he said, visibly angry.

In a sharp critique of the government, Kuti remarked, “The president can’t claim he doesn’t control the petrol situation. He is both the president and the minister of petroleum. They claim to make tough decisions, but there’s nothing tough about it. President Tinubu made a cruel decision with the subsidy removal and floating the dollar—there’s no toughness involved, just wickedness.”
