Emmanuel France Nollywood Icon Dies

Nollywood mourns the loss of acclaimed actor Emmanuel France, who passed away on Monday, September 16, 2024. Nigerian filmmaker Olufemi Ogedengbe announced the actor’s death on Instagram.

Ogedengbe hailed France as a legend in a heartfelt tribute, reflecting on their shared projects. “Rest in peace to one of Nollywood’s greats, Uncle Emmanuel France. He was among the actors I brought to Tanzania in 2006, and we collaborated on three films: She Is My Sister, The Director, and Cross My Sin. R.I.P,” Ogedengbe wrote.

The cause of France’s death has not been disclosed

Emmanuel France, whose career began in Ghana, appeared in numerous Nollywood films, including Cross My Sin, She Is My Sister, The Director, Narrow Escape, Witches, Silent Night, and Exile.

There has been some confusion about France’s nationality. Although many assumed he was Ghanaian, France himself described his identity in a 2011 interview with Modern Ghana. He clarified, “I am not Ghanaian but a ‘Gold Coastian’ because my ancestors came from the Gold Coast. I hold a Nigerian passport, as I was born in Nigeria. I don’t have a Ghanaian passport, nor do I reside in Ghana. I didn’t attend school there, and while Ghanaians don’t recognize me as one of their own, Nigerians see me as a Ghanaian. That’s the reality.”
